After a day of diving Elphinstone, we motored for 10 hours over to the Brothers, two rocky outcrops in the middle of nowhere. As you’ll see in the video, the north wind was blowing hard with whitecaps a-plenty.
The same was true under the surface with some pretty strong currents running north to south. We heard reports of numbers of divers being swept off the site and out into the blue – some had been picked up 5km away just the day before we arrived. The south end of the island was the only place to get respite, and that’s where most of the footage ended up being shot.
Unfortunately, as with Elphinstone, the pelagics were conspicuous by their absence (although we did hear that divers from one of the other boats had repeatedly managed to see some Thresher sharks by swimming out into the blue).
Nonetheless, a very relaxed hawksbill turtle offered some good video opportunities (although I ended up having to shoot into the light to get a look at his face). We also came across the odd jellyfish being eaten by the reef fish – the box fish in the video is quite amusing to watch…
