Day 5 took us to Daedalus, to the south of the Brothers. Having motored overnight, we arrived just in time at around 6am in the morning. We had three dives planned for the day. There were 3 or 4 other dive boats in attendance, fewer than the other places we’d been, but still more than I’d expected.
First dive was on the north point of the reef with a drift down the east wall. The objective was to see the hammerheads. Sadly, nothing doing, at least for Alice and I. Some of the others on our boat spotted a couple at around 25m, but that was later in the dive when they were somewhat shallower.
Nonetheless, the reef was in good condition. Alice spotted a zanzibar shrimp on a whip coral (there’s an attempt to video it included in the clip – it was tough to get it steady and in focus, but you get the idea). These aren’t seen that often, we were told (and indeed it was the only one we were able to spot).
Second dive was planned to be a drift down the west wall to see the anemone city. Unfortunately the current was against us, and so we repeated the first dive once we’d given up fighting the current.
As we approached the boat, there was some excitement and it quickly became apparent that there was a shark in attendance. Everyone knew immediately that it would be an oceanic whitetip. I’ve never seen so many people jump in to the at the cry of “Shark!”. I managed to get a few frames of the shark – nothing great, but it was wonderful to see.
