Beam-watching

Beam-watching

June 2008

I don’t typically show people in photographs on this site. However, anyone who in recent years has joined a tour of Upper Antelope Canyon, Arizona, will know that people are very much part of the experience.

While the word ‘canyon’ may typically conjure up images of a vast echoing space, slot canyons are much more intimate. With 100 or more people squeezed into Upper Antelope Canyon during the summer months, gaining a sense of intimacy with the surroundings is somewhat challenging.

I like this photograph because is shows how things really are in this place: tourists gazing around the canyon, snapping away; the Navajo guide shepherding the transient beams of light across the canyon floor; and all around, the amazing colours and textures of the sandstone.
